Do you care about affordable housing in our community? Tuesday, October 16, head to the Seymour Center from 2:00-3:30 for a presentation on an idea called “master leasing” as a way to promote affordable rental housing. It’s a speaker series presented by Orange County Justice United in conjunction with CHALT, the Chapel Hill Alliance for a Livable Town.


Friday, October 12, the organization NEXT Chapel Hill-Carrboro is holding its fall reception from 6-8 pm at Grey Squirrel Coffee in downtown Carrboro, with music, food, and a chance to learn more about the organization. Find NEXT Chapel Hill on Facebook for more info and a link to buy tickets.


It’s almost Halloween, which means it’s time for the annual Hillsborough Spirits Tours! Friday, October 26, and Saturday, October 27, head to the Dickson House at 150 E. King Street and take a walking tour that meets up with the ghosts of Hillsborough’s past. Tours begin at 7:40 Friday and 5:00 Saturday and run every 20 minutes – get more info at HistoricHillsborough.org.


The Orange County Democratic Party is holding a voter event to discuss the six proposed state constitutional amendments and the judicial races that are on your ballot this fall. Monday, October 15, at 6:30 pm in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough – everyone’s invited.


Wednesday, October 3, Orange County Commissioners will hold a joint meeting with the Chapel Hill Town Council, 6:30 pm at the Chapel Hill Public Library. The agenda includes discussions of light rail, land use management, and affordable housing. OrangeCountyNC.gov for the full agenda. Everyone’s invited to come early, from 5:15-6:15, for a meet-and-greet with Chapel Hill’s new town manager Maurice Jones.


Wednesday, October 3, head to the Chapel Hill Public Library at 11:30 for their monthly book club, Books Sandwiched In. This month’s book is “Lab Girl,” a memoir by three-time Fulbright Award-winning geobiologist Hope Jahren.


Sunday, October 14, head to the Orange County Historical Museum in Hillsborough for a free presentation about the “Forgotten Women Pilots of World War II,” about more than 1100 women who flew more than 60 million miles to aid the war effort. 4 pm, with a lecture by historian Lorelei Craft.


Tuesday, October 2, Orange County is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 pm to celebrate the recent expansion of the Passmore Senior Center. Everyone’s invited to the center to take part!


October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On Thursday, October 18, head to the NC Botanical Garden from 6-8 pm for a cocktail party called “Passion for Purple” to benefit the Compass Center for Women and Families. There will be a silent auction, live music, and food and wine. Visit CompassCTR.org to buy tickets and get more information.


Head to PlayMakers this month and catch their next show, “Skeleton Crew” by Dominique Morriseau. Part of Morriseau’s “Detroit Trilogy,” it’s about workers at an auto plant at the start of the Great Recession in 2008. On stage from Wednesday, October 10, through Sunday, October 28. Thursday, November 15, head to King Street Bar in downtown Hillsborough for burlesque and a book-signing. From 6-8 pm, author Leslie Zemeckis will be signing copies of her new book “Feuding Fan Dancers”; that’ll be followed from 8-10 pm by a fun performance from the Bottom Line Burlesque and Comedy Troupe. They’ll be accepting donations for the hunger-relief organization Second Harvest.
