Wednesday, June 6, the Chapel Hill Public Library is holding another round of the monthly reading group “Books Sandwiched In.” This month’s book is “The Dovekeepers” by Alice Hoffman with a discussion beginning at 11:30am.


Friday, June 1, head to Southern Village at 8:30 pm for a FREE outdoor screening of “Breaking Legs,” a family-friendly high-school dance movie. More info on our events page!


Saturday, June 2, is National Trails Day, and Chapel Hill is marking the occasion with the grand opening of the expanded Tanyard Branch Trail. Head to Umstead Park at 10:00 am for an opening ceremony! Afterwards, the town will also dedicate the new mural inside the Bolin Creek Trail tunnel.


Saturday, June 9, Orange County Animal Services is holding a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic from 9:00 am to noon at the animal services center on Eubanks Road. For more info, call Animal Services at 919-942-PETS.


Saturday, June 9, is graduation day for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools! Ceremonies will be all day at the Smith Center.

  • East Chapel Hill High will graduate at 9:00 am
  • Chapel Hill High will graduate at 1:00 pm
  • Carrboro High will wrap up the day with their graduation at 5:00pm.
  • Phoenix Academy will hold their graduation on Friday, June 8, at 6:00 pm at Extraordinary Ventures on Elliott Road.

Saturday, June 9, the Orange County Historical Museum in Hillsborough is hosting a panel discussion with writers Allan Gurganus, Nancy Peacock, Chris Vitiello (the Poetry Fox) and Elizabeth Woodman.

They’ll be talking about the transition from handwriting to typewriters to computers and how that impacted the writing profession. 4:00-6:00 pm at the museum on North Churton Street.


Thursday, May 31, the Friends of the Downtown are holding their monthly meeting at the Franklin Hotel. Come for coffee at 9:30 am; the program will start at 10:00.

This month’s speaker is UNC senior associate dean Chris Clemens; he’ll talk about a new “Institute for Convergent Science” on campus and what it might mean for local entrepreneurs.


Saturday, June 2, Amina’s Gift is holding an African Art Market from noon to 4:00 pm – raising money to support education and healthcare initiatives for children in Africa. The market will take place at 52 Dogwood Acres Drive near Southern Village. Get more info at AminasGift.org.


Head to the ArtsCenter in Carrboro throughout the month of June and check out the work of three local artists, Ron Liberti, Harry Lane Wurster, and Roger Kellison.

The art will be on sale, with some of the proceeds going to benefit UNC Hospice. Head to the ArtsCenter for an opening reception Friday, June 8, from 6:00-9:00pm in conjunction with Second Friday ArtWalk.
