Redshirt junior Andrew Gunning took home the championship in the 285-pound heavyweight division at the Southeast Open in Roanoake on Sunday, as the No. 17 UNC wrestling team completed its first competition of the season.

Gunning defeated Missouri’s Rodrigo Diaz (5-4), Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Grayson Walthall (3-2) and West Virginia’s Brandon Ngati (3-1) in order to claim the crown. He was the only Tar Heel to win the tournament at their respective weight class.

Zach Sherman (141 pounds) and Kennedy Monday (165 pounds) each took home second place finishes, while A.C. Headlee (157 pounds) and Jaime Hernandez (133) both ended up finishing in third place.
