It took two overtime periods, but the top-ranked UNC field hockey team stayed undefeated on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill–defeating No. 13 St. Joseph’s by a score of 3-2.

As a result, the Tar Heels have are now 17-0 in 2019 and have won their last 40 games overall dating back to the 2017 NCAA Tournament. St. Joseph’s fell to 15-3 after suffering just its third loss of the season.

On Senior Day, it was a pair of seniors who took care of all the scoring for UNC. Catherine Hayden gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal in the second quarter, while Feline Guenther doubled that lead early in the third quarter with her first goal of the season.

After St. Joseph’s scored back-to-back goals to tie the game, Guenther struck again in the second overtime to give UNC the win in its regular season finale.

“Saint Joseph’s is such a strong team and gave us absolutely everything we could handle today,” head coach Karen Shelton said. “This game was a great challenge for us and a valuable experience moving forward.”
