UNC scored two goals in less than two minutes in the third quarter to break a scoreless tie, and the Tar Heels didn’t let up in a 3-0 win at No. 16 Louisville Friday afternoon.

The game went into halftime even at 0-0 despite the Tar Heels holding a decisive advantage in possession. Through 30 minutes, UNC outshot the Cardinals 9-1 and held a 6-1 edge in penalty corners. But the dam didn’t break until late in the third quarter, when Ryleigh Heck scored off a sharp angle, firing the ball nearly parallel to the goal line before it somehow found its way into the Louisville cage.

The Cardinals nearly tied the score 44 seconds later but were denied by goalie Merritt Skubisz’s only save of the day. Just 41 seconds after that, Reese Anetsberger managed to corral a loose ball in front of the Louisville cage and knock it in to double the Tar Heel lead.

Louisville would not manufacture a single shot, on target or otherwise, in the fourth quarter. Though the 2-0 lead clearly was not in any danger, Charly Bruder put the capper on the day with UNC’s third goal late in the quarter.

The win is Carolina’s third in a row, which is the longest winning streak for the Tar Heels this season. In those three wins, UNC has allowed just three total shots on goal and outscore the opposition 15-1. The Tar Heels are also a perfect 4-0 in true road games. Now 6-4 overall and 3-1 in ACC play, Carolina will return to action when it visits Saint Joseph’s in Philadelphia next Friday at 3 p.m.
