Facing its second top-10 opponent at home in as many days, the 14th-ranked UNC wrestling team again fell short in a 23-9 loss to No. 8 Virginia Tech.
The Hokies (6-0) began the dual with a pair of major decision victories at 125 and 133 pounds, giving them a commanding 8-0 lead on the team scoreboard.
UNC (2-2) responded with back-to-back decision wins by No. 10 Zach Sherman and No. 1 Austin O’Connor at 141 and 149 pounds to make the team score 8-6.
From there, however, Virginia Tech dominated–winning five of the dual’s final six matches. The only Tar Heel to earn a victory during that span was unranked Max Shaw at 197 pounds.
The match took place just one day after the Tar Heels were defeated handily by No. 3 NC State–which also won seven of the 10 individual matches.
