Less than a week after getting a thrilling victory over then-No. 12 Pittsburgh, the 15th-ranked UNC wrestling team did it again on Friday at Carmichael Arena–winning the last two individual matches to take an 18-14 victory over the No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies.

Freshman Brandon Whitman and senior Cory Daniel–both unranked at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively–each won tough bouts against ranked opponents in order to steal the win for UNC.

Whitman grinded out a 7-4 win over No. 7 Tom Sleigh to put UNC ahead 15-14 on the team scoreboard, while Daniel earned a 3-2 decision victory over No. 18 Billy Miller to seal the deal.

The Tar Heels had previously led 12-3 through the first five matches, before allowing Virginia Tech to rally back by winning each of the next three–two of which were four-point major decision victories.

As a result, UNC improves to 11-5 overall this season with a perfect 3-0 record against ACC opponents. The Hokies, meanwhile, drop to 8-2 overall with a 2-1 ACC record.
