An early goal by sophomore forward Alessia Russo proved to be all that was needed for the third-ranked UNC women’s soccer team to pull out a 1-0 victory at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary against the No. 11 Boston College Eagles.

Russo’s tally came in the sixth minute of action when she capitalized on a turnover by the opposing goalkeeper.

The win was the eighth in a row for UNC and moves the Tar Heels to 13-2-1 this season (8-0-0 ACC), with just one more win needed against ACC competition to clinch the outright conference regular season title.

Boston College drops to 13-2-1 with the loss, but the Eagles have a 5-2-1 record inside the conference.

Despite shooting the ball 12 times in the match, Boston College managed to put only two of those on target–helping the UNC defense preserve the shutout victory.
