Goalie Taylor Moreno made a last-second save on Saturday afternoon at UNC Lacrosse Stadium to give the third-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team a 13-12 victory over the No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers.
It was the ACC opener for the Tar Heels (5-1, 1-0 ACC), who received four goals from Taylor McDaniels and a pair of hat tricks from Jamie Ortega and Tayler Warehime.
Virginia (6-2, 0-2 ACC) took a 12-11 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game, but UNC was able to rally and score twice down the stretch while holding their own on the defensive end as well.
The Tar Heels have now won 15 of the last 16 meetings in the series with Virginia and have racked up three victories already over teams ranked in the top six this season.
