A close game between two of the top 10 women’s lacrosse teams in the country on Saturday in Charlottesville saw top-ranked UNC score eight of the last nine goals down the stretch to defeat No. 7 Virginia by a score of 18-12.

Junior attacker Jamie Ortega led the Tar Heels with five goals, while Katie Hoeg added four goals and two assists. In addition, the Tar Heels also received three crucial goals from Ally Mastroianni–all of which came during a span of 77 seconds late in the game, extending the Tar Heels’ lead from 13-11 to 16-11.

Virginia (4-2, 0-1 ACC) held a 7-6 lead at halftime, and led 11-10 at one point during the second half before UNC went on a game-changing 7-0 run to take control of the proceedings for good.

As a result, head coach Jenny Levy’s Tar Heels improve to 5-0 to begin the 2020 season with all of their wins coming by at least six goals.

UNC returns to the field on Thursday to host Louisville at Dorrance Field in the first ever women’s lacrosse game televised on the ACC Network. That one is slated for a 6 p.m. start time.
