In a matchup between two of the ACC’s top women’s lacrosse programs, the fifth-ranked Tar Heels handed No. 6 Virginia its first loss of the season on Saturday at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville–using a 9-3 run in the second half to pull out a 13-9 victory.

Senior midfielder Marie McCool scored a team-high three goals for UNC (4-2, 1-0 ACC), while Katie Hoeg, Maggie Bill and Ela Hazar each chipped in two of their own.

Virginia (5-1, 1-1 ACC) got a hat trick in the first half from Sammy Mueller on the way to a 6-4 lead at the break, but the Cavaliers struggled all day to put shots past Tar Heel redshirt freshman goalkeeper Taylor Moreno.

Moreno recorded a career-high 17 saves on the day, while playing the entire game in net.

Her rock solid performance on defense allowed the offense to open up and do what they do best when it mattered most, helping UNC recover from a 17-10 blowout loss to No. 4 Florida last week.
