UNC senior tight end Brandon Fritts suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on Thursday during spring practice for the Tar Heels, just a year removed from tearing the ACL in his left knee.
Earlier this offseason, Fritts considered transferring for his final year of eligibility but ultimately decided to stay with the team after some convincing from new head coach Mack Brown.
Fritts–a high school teammate of former star quarterback Mitch Trubisky in Mentor, Ohio–has caught 47 passes for 439 yards and nine touchdowns during his time at UNC.
His goal is to still try and find a way to be able to contribute in the fall.
“I feel terrible for Brandon, but he’s a tough young man and he’ll work really hard during the rehab process,” Brown said. “He’s been through this before, so that may help him as he navigates the next few months. The staff and I were really excited about having Brandon as a part of this team when he decided he wanted to continue to play.”
