Day Three of this year’s NFL Draft began very similar to Day Two, with a Tar Heel running back taken off the board early–as the New York Jets selected Michael Carter with the second pick of the afternoon and 107th overall.

Carter’s partner in the UNC backfield last season, Javonte Williams, was taken with the third pick of the second round by the Denver Broncos on Friday.

Despite the duo splitting carries this past season, Carter still led the ACC with 1,245 yards on the ground. He also racked up nine rushing touchdowns and caught 25 passes for 267 yards and two more scores–earning First Team All-American status from Pro Football Focus.

The Florida native was arguably UNC’s best big-play threat over each of the last four seasons, combining great quickness with the ability to both run and catch the ball.

His career rushing total of 3,404 yards ranks fourth on the UNC all-time list.

With the Jets, he joins a rebuilding team seeking to completely re-tool the roster under new head coach Robert Saleh. New York previously drafted quarterback Zach Wilson in the first round, then added speedy wide receiver Elijah Moore in the second.
