Coming off the program’s first ACC Tournament title since 2009 this past weekend, the UNC women’s soccer team earned a No. 1 seed for the upcoming NCAA Tournament when the bracket was released Monday afternoon.
The Tar Heels (15-2-2) are set to host Big South conference champion High Point (13-7-1) in the first round–which will begin either Nov. 10, 11 or 12 once the schedule is finalized.
Since the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament was created in 1982, the Tar Heels are the only team to earn a bid each year.
Under the leadership of legendary head coach Anson Dorrance, UNC has won 22 NCAA championships–but are currently mired in the longest drought in program history.
Not since 2012 have the Tar Heels accomplished their ultimate goal, adding extra motivation for this year’s team.
UNC is one of two ACC teams–along with Duke (19-2-0)–to earn a No. 1 seed for the event, and one of eight total. It marks the ninth time in the last 11 years that the league has had at least eight teams selected.
