Following the team’s second straight week without a game, UNC dropped one spot to No. 12 on Sunday in the newest edition of the Associated Press College Football Top 25.

The Tar Heels are 1-0 this season after a 31-6 win at home over Syracuse back on Sept. 12. An outbreak amongst the Charlotte offensive line caused the 49ers to cancel their scheduled visit to Chapel Hill on Sept. 19, while UNC was unable to find an opponent on short notice to fill its open schedule slot this past Saturday.

What is significant about the Tar Heels holding the No. 12 spot is that this week marked a return to the poll for teams from the Big Ten and PAC-12–which recently reversed decisions to postpone their seasons in favor of playing shortened schedules beginning later this fall.

The last time those teams were included in the rankings was the preseason poll, which had UNC at No. 18.

Clemson and Alabama held on to the top two spots in the rankings, with Florida, Georgia and Notre Dame rounding out the top five.

The rest of the top 10 consists of: No. 6 Ohio State, No. 7 Auburn, No. 8 Miami, No. 9 Texas and No. 10 Penn State.

Including Clemson, Notre Dame, Miami and UNC, the ACC has a total of five teams in this week’s poll–with No. 24 Pittsburgh also part of the mix.

UNC is scheduled to return to action this Saturday with a road game at Boston College.
