Before the season, UNC head football coach Mack Brown alluded multiple times to his team’s quick drop in the rankings after losing to unranked Florida State last season. It appears he’ll have more material for next year.

In the latest AP Top 25 poll released Tuesday afternoon, the Tar Heels fell 14 spots from their preseason No. 10 spot to No. 24, just barely within the poll’s boundaries. They are the only preseason top 10 team to fall out of the top 10 this week.

Virginia Tech, victorious over the Tar Heels on Friday, moved into the poll at No. 19 after being unranked in the preseason. Miami, who began the year ranked No. 14, dropped to No. 22 after losing in Week 1 against Alabama. Clemson, whose loss to Georgia rounded out a wretched week for ACC football, fell to No. 6 from their preseason No. 3 ranking. They are still the highest-ranked ACC team.

Notre Dame moved up one spot from No. 9 to No. 8 by virtue of their road win at Florida State on Sunday night. Carolina will face both the Irish and the Seminoles in October. In his weekly radio appearance on 97.9 The Hill’s “Mondays With Mack,” Brown said that the teams “looked great on Sunday night, both of them.” You can view the full poll here.

The No. 24 Tar Heels will take their new ranking into Saturday night’s home opener against Georgia State, which was confirmed to be a sellout by the football program Tuesday. It is the sixth of seven home games this year to sell out.
