The UNC men’s golf team continued its offseason staff shake-up on Tuesday, when it was announced that former UNCW head coach Matt Clark will join the Tar Heels.

Clark will be the top assistant under first-year head coach Andrew DiBitetto, who replaced Andrew Sapp back in June.

In Clark’s 14 seasons as a head coach–time split between Georgia State (2003-08) and UNCW (2008-17)–his teams won a combined five conference championships.

Georgia State reached a national ranking of No. 4 under Clark in 2005, while UNCW posted its lowest team stroke average in school history last season.

“Matt is a fierce competitor and is excellent at helping his student-athletes reach their full potential,” DiBitetto said. “More importantly, he’s a high character individual and a family man.

“He fits perfectly with our goals of developing young men on and off the course and preparing them for life,” the head coach continued. “This is home run hire for our program.”

Clark was also a collegiate golfer himself from 1995-97 at the University of Alabama. His overall experience should greatly help a Tar Heel team looking to build off last year’s appearance in the NCAA Championship Tournament.

“Coach DiBitetto is one of the sharpest young coaches in the game and I look forward to building something special with him in Chapel Hill,” Clark said. “The Tar Heels are returning a very talented team and I look forward to competing for championships with them this season.”
