A trip to the west coast didn’t go quite as planned for the second-ranked UNC women’s soccer team on Friday night, as the Tar Heels fell 1-0 to the No. 12 Santa Clara Broncos for their first loss of the 2018 campaign.
Goalie Melissa Lowder was the star for the home side, as she made eight saves for Santa Clara in a match where UNC (5-1) racked up 18 total shots compared to just seven for the Broncos (5-1-1).
Following a scoreless first half, Santa Clara took the lead in the 60th minute on a goal from Kaile Halvorsen.
In the final seconds, however, Zoe Redei appeared to have tied the game for the Tar Heels until a late offsides call waved off a goal that surely would have ended the game in a 1-1 tie.
