A goal from junior Brianna Pinto midway through the first half on Tuesday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary ultimately proved to be enough for the top-ranked UNC women’s soccer team to defeat Virginia Tech 1-0 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.

Although the final score was close, the Tar Heels dominated the run of play throughout the match–racking up 17 shots and 15 corner kick attempts. For comparison, the Hokies (5-8-0) tallied just three shots and earned only one corner kick.

The win improves UNC to 10-0-0 so far this season, and gives head coach Anson Dorrance’s team a berth in the ACC semifinals for the eighth straight season.

“Virginia Tech is a very fine side. We had difficulty breaking them down but we are excited to move on,” Dorrance said afterwards. “We were happy to be able to play our deep rotation of players and did not have any injuries. I am looking forward to being able to get back out there on Friday.”
