For the second time in less than a week, the top-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team handily defeated a top-10 opponent–picking up an 11-5 victory at home over No. 7 Florida on Friday afternoon.

Junior midfielder Scottie Rose Growney led the Tar Heels (2-0) with a game-high four goals, while Tayler Warehime and Ally Mastroianni each added two apiece. This marks the second straight season that Growney has scored four goals against Florida.

UNC held a slim 4-3 lead at halftime, before turning up the defensive pressure in the second half and outscoring the Gators 7-2 after coming back out of the locker room.

The win comes just five days after the Tar Heels defeated No. 6 Stony Brook by a score of 14-7. UNC has doubled its opponent’s score in both games.

“Our defense was great today again,” UNC head coach Jenny Levy said after the game. “We gave up two really easy goals in the first half, but we were able to make adjustments.

“Florida is a good, well-coached team that likes to score a lot of goals, so holding them to five is great,” she added. “Offensively, it was a wet field, it’s February and we’re still working through a lot of kinks. But I was really happy with how we chipped away at what we needed to do and played a much better second half than we did in the first half.”
