The top-ranked UNC women’s lacrosse team opened its season on Sunday at Dorrance Field with a dominant 14-7 victory over No. 6 Stony Brook.

Senior Katie Hoeg had two goals and five assists to lead the Tar Heels with seven points, while junior Jamie Ortega tallied three goals and two assists to finish just behind Hoeg with five points of her own.

Tayler Warehime also added four goals, including three in the first half to help UNC build a 9-4 halftime lead.

Stony Brook scored the first two goals of the game on Sunday, but the Tar Heels responded by scoring nine of the next 11 goals.

The Seawolves also came out of the locker room hot and recorded the first three scores of the second half. Again, the Tar Heels would respond–this time with a 5-0 run that would keep Stony Brook scoreless the rest of the game.

“I’m really excited for my team,” UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterwards. “When Stony Brook made a run in the second half, it didn’t surprise us because they’re a really great team. I really liked how we responded to their runs.  Overall, a great team win.”
