After cruising to a pair of wins over UNC-Greensboro and Maryland Eastern-Shore to open the Carolina Classic at Carmichael Arena, the UNC volleyball team came out on the wrong end of the scoreline in its final game of the weekend on Saturday–falling 3-1 to the Michigan State Spartans (25-22, 20-25, 19-25, 18-25).
The Tar Heels (2-3) trailed by as many as five points in the first set, before going on an 8-0 run to take control of, and ultimately win, the period.
From there, though, the Spartans (5-1) pulled things back together and took the final three sets in order to clinch the match.
Destiny Cox led UNC with 13 kills in the match, while Skyler Wine added 10.
Perhaps the most important statistic of the night was Michigan State’s .217 hitting percentage, which was twice as successful as the .106 mark put up by the Tar Heels.
It was also the third loss in as many tries for head coach Joe Sagula’s team against Big Ten opponents this season.
