In just the second game of the spring volleyball season on Sunday in Greenville, the Tar Heels fell victim to a 3-0 straight-set upset loss against East Carolina (23-25, 23-25, 16-25).
Aziah Buckner led UNC with 13 kills, but no other Tar Heel reached double digits on a day where they fell behind by 10 points early in the first set and struggled to recover.
ECU’s team hitting percentage of .158 wasn’t much better than UNC’s .098 mark in the same category, but the Pirates (2-4) committed just 15 errors compared to 28 for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels had chances to win each of the first two sets, however ECU refused to ever let UNC get the momentum on its side.
As a result, UNC fell to 7-3 overall this season and 1-1 since the spring season kicked off.
