Taylor Otto scored in the 86th minute on Thursday night in South Bend, to help lead the third-ranked UNC women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The win improves the Tar Heels to 10-2-1 in 2018, with a 5-0 record against conference opponents. Notre Dame, meanwhile, drops to 6-7 with a 2-3 record in ACC play.
Otto’s goal broke a 1-1 deadlock that lasted for over an hour after both teams scored their opening goals within the first 10 minutes of the game.
Sophomore Alessia Russo put UNC on the board just 22 seconds into the game with a beautiful header coming off of a cross from teammate Emily Fox.
Notre Dame then tied things up when Karen Muya notched her third goal of the season in the 11th minute.
The game-winner occurred later on when a shot by Russo was blocked, leaving the rebound for Otto–who promptly put it in the back of the net to keep the Tar Heels’ perfect mark within the ACC.
