Faced with the thought of its first loss against ACC competition coming in the final game of the regular season, UNC sophomore Bridgette Andrzejewski scored a goal with just under 30 seconds remaining to give the fourth-ranked Tar Heels a 1-1 tie against No. 24 Notre Dame at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
The Fighting Irish (9-5-4, 5-3-2 ACC) were poised to steal a victory from UNC (12-2-2, 8-0-2 ACC) on Senior Night, until a late corner kick gifted the Tar Heels a prime opportunity.
Jessie Scarpa took the kick and blasted a laser of a cross into the goalie box, where Andrzejewski received the pass with her head–deflecting it off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
It was the sixth goal of 2017 for Andrzejewski, who has continued to improve after being named ACC Rookie of the Year last season.
Although Notre Dame controlled possession for most of the night, the Tar Heels ultimately finished with a 12-10 shot advantage.
Jennifer Westendorf put the Fighting Irish on the board in the 58th minute to break what had been a scoreless draw to that point, but her team couldn’t quite hold on until the finish.
Instead, the Tar Heels snapped Notre Dame’s two-game winning streak with the tie–and cemented the No. 2 seed for the upcoming ACC Tournament.
