Participating in the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville on Saturday, UNC freshman Jillian Shippee broke the school’s all-time record in the hammer throw event–recording a distance of 63.19 meters on her first attempt to both break the record and win the competition.

The previous UNC record in the event was set by Laura Gerraughty back in 2003.

Shippee–a former national champion in high school–now joins sprinter Brianna Duncan and hurdler Kenny Selmon in an elite trio of Tar Heel track and field athletes who have already broken school records so far this season.

“I’m just happy that the training is really starting to come together right now,” Shippee said afterwards. “I was able to find my rhythm today, and I’m hoping that come championship time I can hit in that range and continue to progress.”
