UNC sophomore Brianna Duncan broke a record that had stood for 27 years on Friday when she ran the women’s 100-meter dash in 11.35 seconds at Duke’s Morris Williams Stadium.

Duncan’s performance was part of the Battle of the Blues event, which pitted UNC against Duke and Michigan.

Her time was 0.02 seconds faster than the old record of 11.37 seconds set by Kendra Mackey back in 1991, making Duncan the fastest woman in Tar Heel history. Earlier this season, she had already set the school record in the 60-meter dash during indoor competition.

Only one other runner in the ACC has posted a better 100-meter time this season, while Duncan also ranks within the top 10 in the East Region and top 20 in the nation.

“The next step for her will be championship performances,” the school’s track and field director, Harlin Meaders, said. “Whether it is the ACC meet or NCAA championship meets, that will really be the next step. But we feel like she has all of the tools. She has demonstrated that she has the ability, and that will be the next measuring stick for her.”
