The UNC men’s and women’s lacrosse teams were road warriors on Saturday, as the men’s team picked up a 21-9 win at Hofstra and the women emerged victorious, 18-9, at No. 20 Clemson.
On the men’s side, the Tar Heels jumped out in front of the Pride early, leading 5-1 after the first quarter and never seeing their lead threatened from there. Two late goals in the second quarter extended the lead to 11-3 at halftime, and Carolina continued to stretch its legs in the second half.
Freshman Owen Duffy spearheaded UNC’s offense, scoring a game-high four goals and adding a game-high five assists. He and Logan McGovern – who also posted a hat trick – were responsible for 23 of Carolina’s 57 total shots. As a team, Hofstra totaled 38.
The win is No. 18 UNC’s second in a row and improves the team to 4-2 overall. Carolina will stay on the road for its next matchup at Wagner on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
On the women’s side, No. 8 UNC gave up the first goal in its first-ever visit to Clemson but quickly took control from there. The Tar Heels scored the next six goals, including two each from Caitlyn Wurzburger and Carolina Godine. UNC led by as much as 9-2 in the first half and 9-4 at halftime. Though the Tigers were more competitive in the second half, they never cut the UNC lead below six goals.
Godine led the way with five goals and two assists, while Kiley Mottice (four goals) and Wurzburger (three) both posted hat tricks. The Carolina defense held Clemson’s attack to just 15 shots on goal. UNC totaled 34.
With the win, Carolina is now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play on the season. It’s UNC’s second ranked win. The Tar Heels will return home on Tuesday evening to face East Carolina at Dorrance Field.
