Both UNC lacrosse teams cruised to wins Friday, with the No. 2 women’s team dominating on the road at Louisville by a score of 20-4 and the No. 4 men’s team rolling past No. 13 Penn 16-8 in Chapel Hill.

Against the Cardinals, Carolina seized control early by taking a 6-0 lead after less than seven minutes of game time. Chloe and Ashley Humphrey combined for three goals in the opening assault, and Chloe added two more before the first quarter was finished for an early hat trick. UNC led 10-1 at halftime and cruised through the second half.

Eight different Tar Heels scored at least two goals, led by Chloe Humphrey’s hat trick. Marissa White, Ashley Humphrey and Kiley Mottice were among the substantial group of UNC scorers to find the back of the net multiple times. Friday’s win marked the second time in five games Carolina has scored at least 20 goals. It’s also UNC’s third road win of the season, which matches the total from 2024.

The Tar Heels are now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in ACC play on the young season. They will be back in action when they host Temple at Dorrance Field Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Later that day in Chapel Hill, the men’s team also took advantage of a hot start against the visiting Quakers at Dorrance Field. After giving up the game’s opening goal, Carolina scored the next seven and rolled from there. Those seven goals came from six different Tar Heels, with Dominic Pietramala among them. UNC’s leading scorer was on his way to a hat trick, and he added his second and third goals of the game – and 17th and 18th this season – in the second half. Pietramala has now registered a hat trick in all four of UNC’s games this season.

Owen Duffy got in on the fun late in the second quarter, scoring the final goal of the first half to give UNC a 10-3 halftime advantage. Carolina led by as many as 11 goals in the game’s home stretch and never let the Quakers get the margin below eight. Twelve different Tar Heels found the back of the net, with freshman Luke Macaluso scoring his first collegiate goal in the fourth quarter.

UNC didn’t have the same luck Sunday against No. 8 Princeton, as the Tigers scored two late goals to send the Tar Heels to a 14-12 loss, their first of the 2025 season.

Carolina used a 6-2 run to take an 8-6 lead early in the third quarter, but Princeton answered with four unanswered goals in a span of less than six minutes to swing back in front. The Tar Heels tied the game at 10-10 and 12-12, but could not find an answer to a go-ahead Princeton goal with 2:40 remaining.

Dominic Pietramala and Owen Duffy both finished with hat tricks for UNC, while Princeton’s Chad Palumbo scored four goals, including the game winner.

Now 4-1 on the season, UNC will be back in action when it hosts Hofstra Saturday at 11 a.m.
