UNC Lacrosse: Women Dominate Boston College, Men Outlast Army

The UNC men’s and women’s lacrosse teams each picked up wins against ranked foes at Dorrance Field Saturday afternoon. The top-ranked women’s team soundly beat Boston College, while the fifth-ranked men held on to beat Army. Both the Eagles and Black Knights are ranked No. 16 in the national polls.

The women led off the day and seized control late in the first quarter. With the score knotted at 2-2, UNC’s Eva Ingrilli gave the Tar Heels the lead just 29 seconds after Boston College had tied the game. Addison Patillo found the back of the net 25 seconds after that, and those two goals in less than a minute sparked a 6-0 Carolina run. The Eagles responded with a 5-1 run of their own to close the deficit to 9-7 midway through the second quarter, but Chloe Humphrey scored twice in rapid succession to kickstart a 7-0 UNC run which extended past halftime.

Humphrey would score five times during a massive 11-1 stretch for the Tar Heels which broke the game open. She scored one more time at the 7:35 mark of the fourth quarter for her eighth goal of the game, a career high for the redshirt sophomore. Humphrey also added three assists, giving her 11 points on the day — also a career high.

Pattillo (five goals) and Ingrilli (four) each also finished with hat tricks for UNC, which outshot Boston College 37-28 and held a 27-18 edge in shots on goal.

With Saturday’s win, UNC is now 9-0 overall this season and 7-0 in ACC play. The Tar Heels have won 31 consecutive games, which extends their own program record. Up next, Carolina will host No. 13 Northwestern at Dorrance Field Wednesday at 6 p.m. It will be a rematch of the 2025 national championship game.

In the men’s game later that afternoon, the Tar Heels trailed for much of the first half after Army scored first and then scored three unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead 4-2. It would turn out to be a game of runs, as Carolina answered that spurt with a 3-0 burst of its own. Dominic Pietramala cut the deficit to 4-3 before Gary Merrill scored two goals in a span of 34 seconds to give UNC a 5-4 advantage. The three goals came in a span of just 1:07.

Army scored in the final seconds of the second quarter and again early in the third to nose in front, but UNC again scored three unanswered goals to take its largest lead of the game at 8-6. The Black Knights would tie the game at multiple junctures in the second half, but would never again take the lead. UNC benefited from tiebreaking goals from Brady Wambach, Brevin Wilson and Anthony Raio in the game’s home stretch, and Caden Harshbarger restored Carolina’s two-goal advantage at 12-10 with 4:15 left. That insurance goal proved critical as Army scored with 45 seconds to go and had two shots to tie the game in the final moments, but both attempts missed the cage.

Harshbarger’s final goal gave the sophomore his first hat trick of his collegiate career. He hadn’t scored at all in four previous appearances this season. Merrill also scored a hat trick, helping UNC to a 46-34 advantage in total shots.

Carolina is now 8-1 overall and has won three consecutive games. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they face No. 4 Harvard in Maryland Sunday at 1 p.m.
