The UNC men’s and women’s lacrosse teams each won again during the weekend, with the men fending off Stony Brook 9-4 and the women earning a 14-9 road win at No. 5 Florida.

On Friday night at Dorrance Field, Carolina found itself in an early hole against the underdog Seawolves. Stony Brook held a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Tar Heels responded with four unanswered goals to begin the second. After Stony Brook cut the deficit to 4-3 at halftime, Carolina scored four more unanswered goals in the third quarter to extend the lead to 8-3. The Seawolves managed only one more goal in the final 15 minutes.

Dominic Pietramala and Ty English each registered hat tricks, with Pietramala tying a career high with five goals. The redshirt sophomore now has nine goals in the Tar Heels’ first two games of the season. As a team, Carolina outshot Stony Brook 41-19 in total held a 26-15 edge in shots on goal. UNC goalie Michael Gianforcaro made 11 saves.

The win improves Carolina to 2-0 for the 12th season in a row. Up next for the Tar Heels is the first road trip of the season, as UNC will visit No. 4 Johns Hopkins in Baltimore on Saturday at 12 p.m.

On Saturday in Gainesville, the Tar Heel women took control early with two goals from Chloe Humphrey in the first 4:01 of the game. Carolina would stay in front for the rest of the afternoon, as Humphrey found the back of the net three more times to finish with five for the game. The redshirt freshman leads the team with 13 through three games this season. Her older sister Ashley Humphrey also registered a hat trick, scoring all three of her goals in the second half as the Tar Heels staved off any attempts by the Gators to rally. Marissa White also scored multiple goals.

Shots were relatively even, with Carolina holding a slim 31-28 edge in total shots and a 22-17 advantage in shots on goal. UNC goalie Betty Nelson made nine saves, a season high through three games for the sophomore.

The victory is a measure of revenge for Carolina, which fell to the Gators in the opening round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. UNC is now 3-0 on the season and will open up ACC play when it hosts No. 6 Syracuse at Dorrance Field on Saturday at 12 p.m.
