Both UNC lacrosse teams were in action on Saturday, with the women’s team going on the road to beat Pittsburgh 16-9 and the men’s team dropping a home contest with No. 7 Syracuse, 10-9.

On the women’s side, the Tar Heels used an 8-1 run from the late first quarter through the early third quarter to break open what was a 2-2 game. Darcy Felter scored three goals in the run and ended the afternoon with a career-high five goals. Kiley Mottice and Reilly Casey also ended up with hat tricks on the day.

The Tar Heels outshot the Panthers 40-19, including a 31-12 advantage in shots on goal. Pittsburgh never led on the day.

The win improves Carolina to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in ACC play on the season heading into the regular-season finale. UNC will celebrate Senior Day when it hosts No. 25 Duke on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Dorrance Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

The men’s team jumped out to a fast start against the No. 9 Orange in Chapel Hill, going up 3-0 within the first nine minutes of game action. But Syracuse responded with seven unanswered goals before halftime and led 7-4 after two quarters.

The Orange then scored the first three goals of the second half, but the Tar Heels rallied in the game’s final 20 minutes. Two goals apiece from Owen Duffy and Trevor Deubner cut the deficit to 10-8, and Logan McGovern netted his 20th goal of the season to make it a one-goal game with 1:48 to go.

Carolina got the ball back on the following face-off, but a Deubner shot with 1:24 remaining was saved, and the Tar Heels wouldn’t threaten again. UNC is now 6-6 on the season and 0-2 in league play, having lost four straight games. The Tar Heels are also just 1-5 at home.

UNC’s next game is a visit to defending national champions Notre Dame on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network.
