In ratings put together by theĀ FIFA Technical Study Group following this past summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, a pair of former Tar Heels were listed among the top 10 performers throughout the event.
Crystal Dunn–one of four Americans on the list–joined England’s Lucy Bronze in representing the Tar Heels among the top 10.
Although Dunn drew some criticism for her play in France due to playing at left back instead of her normal attacking midfield position, this study released on Sunday shows that she was actually one of the most critical pieces for a U.S. team which won its second consective World Cup title.
For Bronze, who led England to the semifinals before falling to the U.S., this recognition adds yet another honor to her long list of achievements. She was recently named the UEFA Player of the Year for her work both with the national team and her club team Olympique Lyonnais in France.
Joining Dunn and Bronze among the top 10 performers were a group of players including: Julie Ertz (USA), Megan Rapinoe (USA), Rose Lavelle (USA), Jill Scott (England), Ellen White (England),Ā Sari van Veenendaal (Netherlands),Ā Vivianne Miedema (Netherlands) andĀ Sofia Jakobsson (Sweden).
According to the Technical Study Group report, āNo previous edition of the FIFA Womenās World Cup was graced by the overall level of talent and outstanding individual performances that were on show in 2019ā.
