Sophomore defender Hope Munson bagged the first two goals of her collegiate career in the first half as UNC defeated Fairfield 4-0 at Dorrance Field in the 2026 season opener Thursday night.
Munson collected her brace in just over a half hour of play, scoring the opening goal of the 2026 season in the fifth minute and then scoring the second in the 33rd. UNC led 2-0 at halftime, having outshot the Stags 14-1 overall and not allowing a single shot on target. The avalanche continued in the second half, as preseason All-ACC honoree Bella Devey earned a brace of her own with two goals in less than seven minutes of game time.
Carolina didn’t allow a Fairfield shot on target until the 73rd minute. Goalkeeper Peyton Trayer made the save on that shot before being subbed off in the 82nd minute. Overall, UNC outshot the Stags 24-3 and 12-1 in shots on target. Carolina also took seven corner kicks, while Fairfield didn’t take any.
UNC opens the season 1-0 for the second time in three seasons under head coach Damon Nahas, having dropped its opener in 2025. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they host Quinnipiac at Dorrance Field Sunday at 1 p.m.
