Top-ranked UNC scored three goals in the first half to build an early lead against No. 12 Notre Dame at Dorrance Field Friday night, and the Tar Heels cruised from there to a 4-1 victory.
Reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week Bella Devey opened the scoring in the 13th minute, corralling a cross from teammate Lilliah Blum and lashing it into the Irish net. That was goal No. 13 on the season for Devey, and she added one more to that total less than five minutes later from the penalty spot. The sophomore has now recorded braces in each of UNC’s last three matches.
Notre Dame got a goal back in the 21st minute, but the Tar Heels restored their two-goal lead shortly afterward. This time it was Blum who did the damage, sending a cross from Amari Manning into the roof of the net in the 27th minute.
UNC extended the lead further in the second half, as Summer Denigan got on the right side of a Blum cross to give the Tar Heels their fourth goal of the evening. Carolina has now scored at least three goals in each of its last six matches, all of which were wins.
No. 1 UNC is now 11-1 overall this season and 4-0 in ACC competition, having won eight consecutive matches. The Tar Heels will be back in action next Friday at 6 p.m. when they visit defending national champions Florida State in Tallahassee. The match will be televised on ESPNU.
