A severe thunderstorm in Orange County on Wednesday caused power outages through the region. But no area was affected as much as Carrboro and south Chapel Hill.

According to the Duke Energy Power Outage map, an estimated 1,000 customers had no power around 4:30 p.m. The outage affected customers along NC Highway 54 and around Smith Level Road. By 5:00 p.m., the number had climbed to 3,000 customers, with 2,000 more reported outages in West Carrboro down Jones Ferry Road.

On its website, the utility company estimated power for the area should be fully restored by 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

In addition to the thunder and lightning, the storms brought heavy rainfall to the area very quickly. The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Southern Orange County that lasted until 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
