UPDATE: As of 6:30 p.m., Duke Energy’s Outage Map said power had been restored to all but 103 Hillsborough customers.
More than 1,000 Duke Energy customers in Hillsborough are experiencing a power outage on Friday evening.
As a band of thunderstorms rolled through the region, much of downtown Hillsborough lost its power according to Duke Energy’s Outage Map — with the issue first reported shortly before 4:30 p.m. According to the online tool, the outage stretched as far south as the Eno River and as far north as Orange High School road, including all of Churton Street and roads off of U.S. Highway 70.

As of 5:20 p.m., Duke Energy said it did not have an estimated time of restoration to customers as its crews responded to the outage and assessed the cause.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Orange, Chatham, Durham and other surrounding counties on Friday afternoon, lasting from around 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. as a band of storms moved over central North Carolina. The alert warned of the potential for strong wind gusts and hail coming from the storm system.
Duke Energy customers without power have several ways to report their outages and track restoration. Users can access the Duke Energy app and make reports through its portal, as well as texting texting OUT to 57801 or calling 800-769-3766 (800-POWERON). The utility company reminded community members that if you see a fallen power line or safety hazard involving energy equipment, do not approach or touch it and instead call 800-POWERON or 911.
If any drivers and road users see a traffic signal blinking or without power, North Carolina laws says it must be treated as a full stop and intersections are to be treated as four-way stops.
