Inclement weather on Wednesday led to a downed tree west of Carrboro — which caused a road closure and power outage.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office alerted drivers at 12:20 p.m. to Jones Ferry Road between Old School Road and Springhill Forest Road being closed to through traffic, as a fallen tree lay across the road near a utility substation. During its fall, the tree also damaged a power line along Jones Ferry Road, and contributed to an outage for about two dozen Duke Energy customers in the area.
Duke Energy’s Outage Map said the outage was first reported after 11 a.m. on Wednesday. As of 7:30 p.m., the estimated time of restoration was midnight on Thursday. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office, meanwhile, said in its alert the North Carolina Department of Transportation did not have an estimated time Jones Ferry Road would reopen overnight.
Wednesday’s rainy and windy weather created some other issues in the area — including a power outage along East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill that affected nearly 700 Duke Energy customers in the afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a series of high wind advisories for southern Orange County throughout Wednesday morning and early afternoon. Additionally, the sheriff’s office warned Chapel Hill drivers about high water across Old NC Highway 86 at Old Spring Road.
