The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its plans for fall sports on Wednesday, which includes changes like largely conference-only matches and shorter schedules.
Football will move to an 11-game schedule, which includes 10 conference games and one out-of-conference game. In addition, Notre Dame will play a 10-game conference schedule and will be eligible to play in the 2020 ACC Championship game. All seven ACC-sponsored fall sports will begin competition during the week of Sept. 7-12.
UNC will play NC State, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest at home, while traveling to Boston College, Duke, Florida State, Miami and Virginia.
UNC’s previously-scheduled non-conference games against UCF, Auburn, UConn and James Madison have been removed, although Inside Carolina reported on Wednesday that UNC would like to keep its non-conference matchup against Auburn.
All non-conference game opponents, selected by the respective school, must be played in the home state of the ACC institution, and all non-conference opponents must meet the medical protocol requirements as agreed upon by the ACC.
For the 2020 season, there will be no divisions in the ACC. The two teams with the highest conference-game winning percentage will meet in the ACC Championship game on either December 12 or 19 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
The ACC also received a report on coronavirus protocols from its medical advisory group. Football players and staff will be tested a minimum of weekly, at least three days before a scheduled game. Athletes who test positive will be isolated for 10 days and then would be exempt from further testing for 90 days from their positive test unless they show symptoms.
Fall Olympic Sports competition may begin on Thursday, September 10. Team sports will play a conference schedule that meets the NCAA minimum amount of games: field hockey (6), women’s soccer (6), men’s soccer (6) and volleyball (10).
Any additional games against conference opponents or non-conference opponents are at the respective school’s discretion and all opponents must meet the ACC’s medical standards. Additional information about fall Olympic sports can be found on the ACC’s website.
Other Power 5 conferences have also taken up this model for a fall schedule. The Big Ten conference announced its intentions to move to conference-only for the fall 2020 semester earlier in July.
