Residents in northern Hillsborough may hear more noise than normal coming from the Resco Products quarry on Friday. Local fire and emergency response crews are set to destroy several fireworks as part of a removal from nearby property.
Releases from the Town of Hillsborough on Wednesday and Thursday alerted residents to a portion of Faucette Mill Road being closed to traffic starting Friday morning. The town government said the fireworks, which belong to a former fireworks distributor, are extras held in storage at the distributor’s residence. The pyrotechnic devices will be transported in a secure trailer from the property, with the road being closed to ensure emergency response vehicles can be on-site during the removal process.
From there, the fireworks will be taken to the quarry located off Eno Mountain Road and destroyed. The process is expected to take most of Friday, with work potentially resuming on Saturday.
Orange County Assistant Fire Marshal Elizabeth Farnan said there is no defined amount of fireworks that will be destroyed. She said in a release the explosives have been stored in a 40-foot long trailer.
Staff from the Orange Rural Fire Department, the Town of Hillsborough, the Orange County government and the state government are working together on the removal and destruction of the fireworks. The operation will be used as a training exercise, according to the Hillsborough release.
Hillsborough and fire officials request community members not congregate to observe the fireworks’ removal or destruction process, although the area of the quarry where they will be destroyed is not accessible to foot or vehicle traffic.
“Fireworks are dangerous at all times,” said Farnan in a release. “Spectators at a fireworks display must remain a certain distance away from where fireworks are lit. The same concept applies here. Fireworks can be unpredictable, and we do not want any bystanders to get hurt. In addition, emergency response staff must be able to focus on their work.”
Orange County fire officials said no pictures or videos taken of the fireworks’ destruction will be shared.
