All water from the Town of Hillsborough is safe to drink, according to the local government, following a weekend of a boil water advisory and warnings from the town.

The Town of Hillsborough issued a boil water advisory for customers in its central zone on the morning of Saturday, August 15. The advisory was issued after the water system’s central pressure zone experienced low pressure due to a major water main break. On Monday morning, the town sent out a release lifting that advisory.

According to the town’s Monday morning release, testing of water samples found no contaminants in water samples taken after the water main was repaired. Customers may resume normal water use and do not need to take actions such as running water, changing filters or dumping ice.

The town sent the initial advisory at 3 a.m on Saturday morning. after it discovered a 6-inch water main leak on Elizabeth Brady Road which led to low pressure in the water system’s central zone. The affected area included downtown, West Hillsborough, the north side of U.S. 70A to Lawrence Road except for Forest Ridge, and Tuscarora and Morelanda Drives.

The Saturday morning notice from the town initially asked for water conservation, but an update from the town provided Saturday afternoon stated that water conservation is no longer requested; and that utilities crews conducted bacterial testing in the affected area of the water system. It takes 24 hours to receive results, which were initially expected by midday Sunday. An update posted on the town’s website Sunday morning, indicated the results were now not expected until Monday morning.

According to the town, water samples to test for bacteria could not be taken Saturday due to the large amount of air in the water main after repairs were made. Utilities crews continued to flush the 6-inch water main on Elizabeth Brady Road throughout Saturday and took samples to the lab Sunday morning. The boil water advisory stayed in place until the results of the testing were received.  An interactive map of the affected area can be found here.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and are grateful for our water dedicated town staff who are working overnight to resolve the problem,” said Utilities Director Marie Strandwitz.

Businesses will either operated under previously established plans for boil water advisories, or they closed until the issue wass resolved.

As the town worked to remedy the situation, it said it purchased water from the City of Durham to restore the tank on Hasell Street.
