The Town of Hillsborough issued a boil water advisory for customers in its central zone on the morning of Saturday, August 15. Affected residents should boil water for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth as a precaution.

The town sent the advisory at 3 a.m. after it discovered a 6-inch water main leak on Elizabeth Brady Road which led to low pressure in the water system’s central zone. The affected area includes downtown, West Hillsborough, the north side of U.S. 70A to Lawrence Road except for Forest Ridge, and Tuscarora and Morelanda Drives.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and are grateful for our water dedicated town staff who are working overnight to resolve the problem,” said Utilities Director Marie Strandwitz.

In addition to boiling water, the town urged customers to conserve water, avoiding activities like car washing, irrigation or pressure washing. Businesses will either operate under previously established plans for boil water advisories or they will close until the issue is resolved.

As the town works to remedy the situation, it said it will purchase water from the City of Durham to restore the tank on Hasell Street. It intends to return the system to normal pressure by Saturday afternoon.
