Hillsborough mayor Mark Bell has issued a statement in support of 19-year-old Isaac Gallegos, an Orange High School graduate and Hillsborough resident who is currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Gallegos has been detained since Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Read Bell’s full statement below:
On behalf of the Town of Hillsborough, I extend my support to Isaac Gallegos and his family and call for his immediate return to our community while awaiting resolution of his asylum proceedings.
Isaac has been a valued member of the Hillsborough community for 10 years and has been engaged in our community in numerous ways while faithfully navigating the immigration process without incident.
His contributions to his family, the community, Orange High School, his church and friends are well known in Hillsborough, and we call upon federal immigration officials to release Isaac without delay.
The Daily Tar Heel reports Gallegos graduated from Orange High School in 2025 and that he was a captain on the Panthers’ varsity soccer team. The article, published Monday, also reported that Gallegos was arrested in Charlotte during what his family thought was a routine appointment related to its asylum case.
