Orange High School athletic director Mike McCauley died Monday after a brief battle with illness, Orange County Schools announced on Tuesday.

“Coach McCauley was a valued member of our staff and community,” OHS principal Jason Johnson said. “He worked countless hours to ensure that our athletic program at Orange High School was a success. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will truly be missed.”

Orange County Schools described McCauley as “the consummate professional” who “improved on past successes and strengthened the school as a whole by leading a fundamentally sound, supportive, healthful, and competitive athletic program.” A statement from the school system also praised McCauley’s “quiet care and steady professionalism.”

McCauley became athletic director in the summer of 2016 and had previously served as an assistant athletic director, assistant football coach and a teacher in the exceptional children’s department. McCauley also served in positions at Southern Lee High School and Graham High School before coming to Orange High.
