The Town of Hillsborough alerted residents and motorists about expected traffic delays downtown Friday afternoon.
A message from the town distributed Thursday evening said a march planned to begin at 4 p.m. will cause stoppages to traffic as protesters walk from First Baptist Church on West King Street to the Historic Orange County Courthouse on East King Street. The release said organizers of the demonstration have been in touch with town and county staff to plan a safe pedestrian route, but additional traffic delays along other streets may also occur.
According to the Town of Hillsborough, organizers have planned the protest in solidarity with other demonstrations across the United States, which are speaking out against police violence. The release said an additional event is planned following the march, with the Northern Orange NAACP holding a vigil for the state of black lives in America at the Historic Orange County Courthouse. That event is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Many other areas around the state have seen recent protests, including Chapel Hill. On Wednesday, protesters marched down Franklin Street to advocate for police reform and more equitable treatment of African Americans.
The Town of Hillsborough’s full release on the traffic delays and event can be found on the town’s website.
