UPDATE: The Chapel Hill Police Department shared an alert at 1:54 p.m. saying normal traffic patterns on East Franklin Street have resumed. Duke Energy reports no more outages for customers in the area.
A stretch of East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill closed Monday morning in both directions just east of downtown, after an early-morning car crash that knocked down an electrical pole and power lines.
A statement at 5:20 a.m. from the Chapel Hill Police Department said a single-vehicle crash caused the damage, while the driver was not injured. Police and Duke Energy crews diverted traffic away from the area around Roosevelt Drive as repairs were made throughout the morning and early afternoon.
At the peak of the outage Monday morning, Duke Energy reported more than 300 customers without power, according to its outage map. Residents in neighborhoods along East Franklin Street as far east as Howell Lane to as far west as Cottage Lane experienced outages.
According to the Chapel Hill Police Department’s initial release, the driver of the vehicle that crashed in the early Monday morning hours did not sustain serious injuries.
