Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to reflect power being restored for those customers affected on Monday.

Nearly 2,000 Duke Energy customers experienced a power outage in Chapel Hill Monday morning due to a fallen tree on a power line.

A message from the Chapel Hill Police Department alerted the community to the fallen tree, which happened during cold and rainy weather on Monday. The tree fell along East Franklin Street near power lines located by Elizabeth Street, according to police.

As a result, Duke Energy reported 1,986 customers without power, stretching from Erwin Road to as far west as parts of UNC campus and downtown Chapel Hill. By 11:40 a.m., however, the energy company said power had been restored.

Chapel Hill Police said while the tree is cleared and the power line is repaired, the stretch of East Franklin Street will be down to one west-bound lane.
