Duke Energy reports power for more than 4,100 Chapel Hill residents has been restored after being out for much of Friday afternoon.

The energy provider updated its outage map shortly before 7 p.m. and alerted residents to power being restored after equipment damage caused an outage for residents along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

At its peak outage, customers along the major Chapel Hill road from as far south as Umstead Drive and Hillsborough Street to as far north as Weaver Dairy Road experienced no power. Traffic signals on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard were out for most of the afternoon, leading Chapel Hill Police to have officers on-scene directing traffic at the busy intersection of MLK and Estes Drive.

According to Duke Energy, the first outages were reported shortly before 2 p.m. The cause listed for the outages are “equipment going offline” and do not indicate whether it was affected by thunderstorms in the Chapel Hill region Friday afternoon.

Residents and community members continuing to experience outages can report to Duke Energy by texting OUT to 57801, report online or call 800.419.6356.
