Hillsborough residents should be prepared for road closures Saturday, August 10, as the Carolina Tarwheels will be hosting their annual BikeFest Rural Heritage Tour.

The ride will begin and end in Hillsborough, starting at the intersection of East Margaret Lane at South Cameron Street with the cyclists heading west. Police will briefly close the intersection of Margaret Lane and South Churton Street, beginning at 7:30 a.m., for riders to pass.

BikeFest is planned to take place from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Cyclists will ride through rural Orange and adjacent counties to complete the tour.

There are three routes for participating cyclists to choose from: a 35-mile, 62-mile and 100-mile. This year, 850 people are expected to attend the event.

All proceeds raised from BikeFest go toward community bicycling related activities. Over the past 6 years The Tarwheels have donated over $15,000 per year to recipients such as Triangle Bike Works, Bridge2Sports Adaptive Cycling Program, Durham Bike Cooperative, the Special Olympics Cycling Team and the Carrboro Bicycle Coalition.

More information on the closures is available on the town’s website.
