Chapel Hill resident Vickie Fornville has announced her entry into the crowded race for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education. Fornville is a graduate of CHCCS and a former parent ambassador for McDougle Middle School.
Fornville told Chapelboro she wants the community “to see someone who is running for the board because they show up for our students, staff and families in and out of the schools. I am running because I show up in these spaces.”
Among Fornville’s goals should she win election to the board is the continuation of free breakfasts and lunches in schools, a policy which was implemented during the COVID pandemic.
“If no one had to pay for meals at school,” Fornville said, “that would be one less thing that our students and families would have to worry about.”
Fornville also advocated for more time set aside for mental wellness during the school day, adding that while she thinks the district is addressing the matter, she “would like to see even more opportunities.”
“Chapel Hill is my home,” Fornville said, “and I take the responsibility of serving and caring for our community very seriously. Growing up in Chapel Hill and attending the schools in our district gives me a different perspective, and that perspective is one that needs to be a part of the narrative in making decisions and policies.”
Four seats on the Board of Education are up for grabs in this election cycle. Fornville is one of 19 candidates who have filed to run in the race, 17 of whom will appear on the ballot.
Early voting for the fall local government elections begins on Thursday, October 19, while Election Day is Tuesday, November 7.
