Bicyclists in Carrboro may have to alter their routes for a few days as parts of the Frances Shetley Bikeway will be closed.
The Town of Carrboro issued a release on Tuesday saying the stretch of bikeway from the Greensboro Street and Estes Drive intersection will be closed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays as construction workers continue to transform the area into a roundabout.
The sewer line relocation associated with the $3.4 million project has reached a crossing point with the bikeway. Carrboro estimates through Monday June 29, crews will be moving large equipment into the area to remove rock. Tuesday’s release said the temporary closure is necessary to protect public safety and facilitate movement of construction equipment.
According to the town, the bikeway will be open outside of construction hours. Bicyclists will also see signs indicating a detour to Oak Avenue during the closures.
Carrboro is constructing a roundabout at the popular intersection in an attempt to reduce traffic delays and increase safety. The construction provides an opportunity for the Orange Water and Sewer Authority to replace aging stormwater and sanitary sewer lines underneath the roadway as well.
Construction on the project began in August 2019 and the town estimates the roundabout will be completed by September 2021. Updates on the North Greensboro Street and Estes Drive Roundabout project can be found on the Town of Carrboro website.
